Curriculum

1. Course planning

     The courses we offer are divided into three parts, the first part is aim to teach students the basic sciences of plant growth and development, plant biochemistry, plant anatomy and plant metabolism. The second part of the course is teaching students how a convergence of tropical plant sciences, genomics and bioinformatics can accelerate the development of metabolomics. The third part of the course is a continuation of the second part of the course and based upon knowledge of basic plant sciences to implement concept of plant biotechnology. Plant biotechnology encompasses the development, optimization and usage of biotechnological processes for the purpose of innovating and achieving greater efficiency in plant production. This part of the course will cover scientific principles, techniques, and application of plant biotechnology in Taiwan and other countries. Our educational goals are aim to train professionals in plant biotechnology by attaching equal emphasis in basic and specialize areas and by complementing theory and practical application of the tropical plant sciences.


2. Principles and characteristics of course design

We offer courses contain both theoretical and practical aspects of plant sciences in depth and breadth. We also focus on scientific principles and techniques in plant biotechnology such as plant molecular genetics, plant molecular biology, plant tissue cultures, plant gene transfer and screening of transgenic plants. The use of plant biotechnology in molecular-assisted breeding and variety verification also emphasized. Controversial aspects of biotechnology are also addressed, especially the ethical, legal and social implications of biotechnology. Our course design aim to educate professionals in plant biotechnology.

The students of the Institute of Tropical Plant Sciences not only can carry out their research projects with faculty members at the Institute, but also can work with principle investigators from Academia Sinica Biotechnology Center in Southern Taiwan, Tainan District Agricultural Research & Extension Station, Asian vegetable research and Development Center, Taiwan Sugar Research Institute, and Taiwan Orchid Plantation through liaison programs between the university and different research organizations. The graduate students will able to enhance their practical knowledge and problem-solving skills through the cooperative education. This is virtual for paving solid foundation in promoting post-modern Agriculture in Taiwan.
